Clearwings on the doorstep.

In 2006 Harry Whiteley discovered Yellow-legged Clearwings (Synanthedon vespiformis) were breeding on a Cherry tree in his garden at the foot of Hollins Hill, Baildon, West Yorkshire, VC64. This year I decided to try and trap one in my own garden which is approximately 1 mile away from Harry's.

Despite the poor weather in the first week of July 2007 I baited a green plastic funnel trap with a VES pheromone lure and suspended this in a cherry tree outside my front door (photo 1.) Cherry tree in suburban front garden

I inspected the trap on the evening of 6th July and was rewarded with a Yellow-legged Clearwing (photo 2.) Yellow-legged Clearwing

Meanwhile, outside the back door, Currant Clearwings (Synanthedon tipuliformis) are still flying around the blackcurrants (photo 3.) Currant Clearwing

The next project will be to record the Yellow-legged Clearwing on the nearby Denso Nature Reserve which is looking like a Cherry Orchard at present!.
